Why Trickster?
The
theme of the Trickster appears in almost all traditional
cultures around the world as a spirit who is creative,
subversive and mischievious.
In Native American culture, the trickster
is an imaginative, mischevious spirit, often portrayed
as a Coyote or Raven, who gave the sun to humanity and
who represents creativity.
West
African trickster stories star Tortoise, Anansi the
Spider, Zomo the Hare (African storytellers brought
the latter to America where it was integrated with the
native American hare eventually becoming Brer
Rabbit).
In Japan, tricksters are Badger,
Tengu. , mischievous trickster spirits, and Kitsune,
a shape-shifter.
In Europe and South and Central America the trickster
can be Fox or Wolf. Norse mythology has Loki as their
trickster. Greek mythology has Hermes as theirs whilst
the Trickster in Aotearoa (NZ) and across the Pacific
Islands
is Maui.
Our Coyote head logo (show above)
is borne out of this ancient global tradition.
